WhatsApp Messenger review

WhatsApp Messenger is a messaging app with built-in voice and video calls, group communication, file transfer feature, and other extras. Easy to install and master and completely free, this app (now owned by Facebook) has since 2009 the most popular messenger in the world.

Design and Usability 8/10

If you know how to use a regular phone app, you’ll get with WhatsApp. Its interface is similar to that of SMS and phone callers of most smartphones. You see the chat log, the call log, and exclusive tabs like the camera and the status tab (to update your status and view your contacts’ updates).

The only significant difference is that you cannot directly access your contact list. You need to start making a call or composing a message and then select the receiver. This makes communication more message-oriented, though.

Key Functions 10/10

With WhatsApp, you can exchange unlimited text messages, make private or group audio and video calls, participate in groups, send and receive documents, photos, videos, locations, and other sorts of data. Status updates are great if you want to say something to all your friends at once.

In addition, there are extras like rich text formatting in messages, built-in document, and image viewer, YouTube videos embedding, and so on. In fact, you don’t have to leave WhatsApp to view the materials you receive. What impresses the most, all of these services are completely free. Even that small fee the service announced at the start has been canceled, as Facebook claims, forever.

Security 8/10

WhatsApp offers features like end-to-end encryption of your calls and messages. The messages are not stored on the messenger’s servers (the way they are in, say, Telegram). You can back them up manually if you want to: on Google Drive in the Android version or on iCloud in the iOS version. It requires your phone number but doesn’t expose it to strangers. Still, you cannot prevent leaks if Facebook makes a legit decision to share your data.

Cons:

  • · Your contacts may prefer other messengers
  • · Facebook’s policy doesn’t feel the most secure

Pros:

  • Unlimited messages and calls
  • Works even under poor coverage
  • Built-in viewers for almost everything
  • It’s the most popular messenger, so your friends probably have it
